A New Rising Star? Assemble Battle Poets!

Hello Buddyfighters! Welcome to our first ever post in this blog. Today we're here to talk about a possible contender for the next best deck a person can use in the next tournament you enter!  A long forgotten and easily accessible deck in hero world known as battle poets has risen up with support in the most recent booster set:  D-BT04 - Shine Super Sun Dragon.  Although the deck may have only received one card, this one card is exactly what the deck needed to become a strong contender for a top spot in the current meta.  Let's go over what makes the deck special and how it works.

The Battle Poet archetype is quite powerful but rather small.  It consists of 4 monsters, 1 spell, and 1 impact (not an impact monster).  The archetype has one size 0 monster known as Battle Poet Reporting, and three size 3 monsters which go by the names of; 'Battle Poet Talking, Battle Poet Thinking, and Battle Poet Speaking.  The only spell Battle Poets have exclusively to themselves is Resupply Complete! Battle Poets, Launch! and the heart of the deck is their impact known by Shout Out Battle Poets! Lyric Over!.  These six cards are all key components which make the Battle Poet deck a powerhouse deck that players of all skill levels should be careful of.

Although the archetype may be limited to a measly 6 cards it can be used with other hero world spells and monster to turn into one of the most frightening rush decks to ever face.  The deck has the <<Brave Machine>> attribute which means there are cards with the Ride ability as well as being able to utilize powerful spell cards such as; Call, Super Machine!, Body of Steel, and Prepped and OK to launch!.  The monsters having the Ride ability is also very important because it means the monsters; Bird Deity, Saibird, Beast Deity, Tigerthrust, and Ocean Deity, Slashshark.  I prefer to call these three the animal pals as they act like pals by supporting you by giving abilities and stat bonuses to your Ride

Also gains 5000 power
making it able to bust down walls!
To get into detail about what makes the Battle Poet archetype a great contender as the next meta deck let's start with going over their main monster Battle Poet Talking.  Battle Poet Talking (image to the right) is a size 3 <<Brave Machine>> monster with the stats of 6000/2/6000 (attack power/critical/defense power).  Talking has a call cost of 1 gauge while having a Ride cost of 2 gauge.  Talking has the Penetrate ability as well as the named ability "Roar Language Finger!" which allows you to discard one card with Battle Poet in the name and if you do, Talking gains 2 critical for the turn!  This is important because that means that during most turns Talking will have at least 4 critical and one to two attacks allowing for a consistently high damage output.  Between having two powerful abilities Talking earns his spot as the main card that any Battle Poet players will want to Ride. Talking is an extremely important card to the deck and allows for some high pressure and threatening plays to occur.

The next Battle Poet that players use as their backup Ride target is Battle Poet, Speaking.  Speaking is another size 3 <<Brave Machine>> monster with the stats of 6000/2/5000.  Speaking is probably the weakest of the Battle Poets with only having one ability that has a name and can only be used once per turn (O.P.T.) as well as a 2 gauge call and ride cost.  Although Speaking may be the weakest Battle Poet he is no pushover due to his ability "Shout, High Megaphone Cannon!" which allows him to discard a battle poet card from the hand and if you do, you may destroy a monster or item on the opponent's field.  This ability is extremely useful and does a great job dealing with potential threats such as powerful item cards which have powerful abilities or by destroying powerful monsters before they have the chance to do any major damage or impact the game.  Speaking is another great card in the Battle Poet Deck and is another reason the deck can do so well in the current meta.

The next behemoth among the Battle Poet lineup is Battle Poet, Thinking.  Thinking is a size 3 <<Brave Machine>> monster with the stats of 6000/2/4000 and has three abilities.  These abilities allow thinking to become the deck's utility and create various attack patterns which apply large amounts of pressure to the opponent.  Two of his abilities are the keywords Soulguard and Move .  Like the other size 3 Battle Poet monsters Thinking has a named ability which is O.P.T. as well.  The name of this ability is "Sing, Mic Blade!" which allows for any Battle Poet card to be discarded from the hand and if it is done, then any Battle Poet on the field can be given Double Attack.  This is important because when combed with Talking, can cause high damage output fields that can O.T.K. (One turn kill) the opponent and end the game swiftly.  The Battle Poet deck would be in a very difficult spot without Thinking and utilizes Thinking's effects to the fullest extent allowing the deck to perform in high level competitions.

After covering the original trio a fourth man was added to the team and he proves himself as an all-star as soon as he was introduced.  This monster is none other than Battle Poet, Reporting!  Battle Poet, Reporting is a size 0 <<Brave Machine>> monster who has the stats of 3000/1/2000 with 2 extremely powerful abilities that make the Battle Poet deck extremely consistent.  The first of this all stars two abilities is an on enter ability (ability which activates upon entering the field) and allows the player to pay 1 gauge and if they do, to add one card from the drop zone into the soul of a Battle Poet on the field.  This is a very powerful ability because it allows for the Battle Poet's ace card Shout Out Battle Poets! Lyric Over! to be added into the soul of a Battle Poet extremely consistent.  The second of Reporting's abilities is one that procs (activates) when it is discarded by the ability of a Battle Poet.  If Reporting is discarded by the ability of a Battle Poet, the player who used the Battle Poet's ability and discarded Reporting may draw a card which is very useful because it prevents Battle Poet players from losing significant amounts of hand due to the ability costs of the Battle Poet monsters.  The combination of these two abilities on a card makes Reporting the most versatile monster in the deck that can be used in the combinations of abilities that the Battle Poet deck has.

Now that all the main monsters in the Battle Poet deck have been covered it is important to go over the only spell that the deck has which is Resupply Complete! Battle Poets, Launch!.  There is not much to the spell aside from the reality is that is a armor reuse for Battle Poets that also gives them a gauge.  Although the card may be relatively simple does not dismiss the fact that the card is extremely useful and helps with the decks combos as well as recovery when the deck needs it.  The only other limitation on the spell aside from it being only able to retrieve a monster or impact with Battle Poet in the name is that the spell can only be used O.P.T.

Onto the card that can arguably be called the heart of the Battle Poet deck and solving many of its problems.  The only card that could possibly be referred to in this manner is none other than the Battle Poet's signature impact card Shout Out Battle Poets! Lyric Over!  This extremely powerful impact card has a cast cost of 2 gauge and 2 abilities.  One is the on cast ability which is at counter speed allowing to be used in the main phase of a turn like a spell and this counter ability allows the player casting the impact to put it inside the soul of a Battle Poet on the field.  The second ability is extremely important because it makes the Battle Poet deck as scary as they are by giving all Battle Poets on the field an additional 2000 attack power, 2000 defense power, and 1 critical!  It also makes the card that the impact was placed into the soul of unable to be destroyed by card effects allowing for some scary combos by placing multiple into the soul of one or more Battle Poets to gain large amounts of attack power, defense power, and critical because the impact does not limit the number of copies that can be placed into the soul of Battle Poets.  Due to these benefits of the impact, the card allows for all kinds of attack and defense patterns that can utterly destroy the opponent within two-to-three turns and helps Battle Poets become the powerhouse deck that they currently are.

Just like all other hero world decks, one large requirement for the deck to function well is to have enough gauge to do anything the player may want to do in that turn.  That is why hyper energy is a Hero World staple and Battle Poets are no exception.  The only thing is that unlike most hero world decks, due to the spell Resupply Complete!  Battle Poets, Launch! there is not a need to run four copies of hyper energy in the deck as the gauge isn't so gauge heavy that they need to run four copies of hyper energy along with four copies of a spell that adds gauge while giving the deck a benefit it needs.  There is also the option to play a monster that is in hero world known as Blitz Envoy, Shinybell (to the left) if the need for gauge accel still exists (which it more than likely does).  Between having a size 0 monster who gives the player one gauge at counter speed, a spell that gives a gauge when adding a Battle Poet to the hand, and hyper energy the deck satisfies all of its gauge needs.

Although the deck has many strong points it does have some weaknesses that can be the key to defeating the deck in a match.  Battle Poets are a gauge heavy rush deck that can easily pummel down the opponent in a single turn.  To beat this deck can be very difficult depending on the deck in use.  To beat this deck see if your deck can do any of the following; return the opponent's item to the hand from the field (to get around the impact's effect of nullifying destruction), remove soul consistently (to deal with thinking's Soulguard and to remove the impact out of any Battle Poet on the field to make the match easier), have consistent damage reduction and attack nullifiers that way the deck doesn't O.T.K. you, have cards that can remove the opponent's gauge (to limit the plays their deck can do), and probably the most affective method is item resting to prevent their biggest batch of damage from ever affecting you.

These methods can be difficult to achieve but their are some great cards to achieve these methods.  The best card to use against the matchup is barbed wire as it rests an opponent's item for free!  Another great card to use against the matchup is available to all magic world decks.  This card is Boy Transformation, Asmodai which has the skill of when it enters the field to discard one card from the player's hand to the field and if they do, return one card on the field to the owner's hand.  Soul removal cards are now accessible to every world with the addition of the generic spell remove and most world's before that had access to a card that could remove soul making soul removal an easy option.  The issue with having more nullifiers and damage reducers is that they are not usually sided and would take up slots for more valuable sideboard cards so it is not worth siding them (just main the normal amount of nulls/reducers) and the same goes for cards that lower the opponent's gauge.

With all the evidence above it is most certainly a debate weather Battle Poets are a rising powerhouse deck or an extremely powerful rouge deck.  That is up for you guys to decide but the deck is budget-friendly as the whole deck costs less than $100 USD at lowest rarity (no parallel foils).  I would also be excited for the next article as it is a basic tier list going over the Asian meta and breaks down where each deck is!  Hopefully your views may align or even go against what has been placed.  Well then, until next time fellow Buddyfighters!
